Web Hosting Glossary

Plain-language explanations of terms you'll see in web hosting, networking and web development.

cPanel

Popular web hosting control panel. Lets you manage files, databases, email, backups and more through a GUI.

SSL / TLS

Encryption protocol for internet traffic. Powers HTTPS and protects sensitive data in transit between browser and server.

CDN (Content Delivery Network)

Global network of edge servers that serve content from the closest location to the visitor. Speeds up sites worldwide.

DNS

Service that translates domain names (like example.com) to IP addresses. The internet's phone book.

VPS (Virtual Private Server)

Virtual server that mimics a dedicated physical server. Has guaranteed resources and doesn't share with other tenants.

SSD

Flash-based storage drive. 10-100x faster than traditional spinning disks. All our servers are SSD-based.

FTP / SFTP

File transfer protocols between your computer and a server. SFTP is encrypted and more secure.

MySQL

Open-source relational database. Especially popular for PHP-based sites like WordPress.

LiteSpeed

Very fast web server with built-in caching. An efficient replacement for Apache for WordPress sites.

CloudLinux

OS for hosting servers that isolates accounts so one site can't impact another's performance. Free on the managed VPS; a paid add-on on the custom VPS at ₪40 a month.

Uptime

Percentage of time a service is available to users.

Latency

Time it takes for a request to travel to the server and back.

TTFB (Time to First Byte)

Time from sending a request to receiving the first byte of the server's response, a key server response indicator. An Israeli server serving Israeli users gives 30-80ms; an American server gives 250-400ms.

Backup

Copy of data used for recovery after failure or deletion.

Restore Point

Specific backup snapshot you can recover to.

Firewall

Rule-based traffic filtering at network or host level.

WAF (Web Application Firewall)

Filters HTTP-level threats before they reach the application.

Load Balancer

Component that distributes traffic across multiple instances.

Autoscaling

Automatic resource adjustment based on demand.

Container

Isolated runtime package for application deployment.

CI/CD

Automated build, test, and deployment pipeline.

SLA (Service Level Agreement)

Defines support and availability targets.

Incident

Unplanned event that degrades or interrupts service.

Postmortem

Structured analysis after an incident, with corrective actions.

RTO (Recovery Time Objective)

Target time to restore service.

RPO (Recovery Point Objective)

Acceptable data-loss window.

Observability

Ability to understand system behavior from logs, metrics, and traces.

Imunify360

Integrated security solution for hosting servers: file scanning, real-time attack blocking, and server- and application-level firewalls.

HTTP/3 + QUIC

New generation of HTTP that reduces latency on congested connections, especially on mobile. Available with us via LiteSpeed.

Core Web Vitals

Three metrics Google uses to score page experience: LCP (Largest Contentful Paint), INP (Interaction to Next Paint), and CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift). Server response time affects LCP.

WHM (Web Host Manager)

Server-level management interface (cPanel manages a single account). Used for reseller hosting.

DNS Propagation

The process by which a DNS change spreads across the internet. Usually takes up to 48 hours.
